<p style="text-align: justify;">Resistors have typically filled a need to inexpensively load AC output devices; however using resistors presents disadvantages to the testing process:</p>

<li>Elaborate switching/resistor networks are needed to automatically change load levels</li>
<li>Resistors provide only unity power factor, thus do not simulate real world loads</li>
<li>Resistors impedance change with temperature so accurate load levels are nearly impossible to obtain</li>
<li>Current shunts and DMMs are also needed to measure actual load current and voltages</li>
