AC Loads vs Resistors

Resistors have typically filled a need to inexpensively load AC output devices; however using resistors presents disadvantages to the testing process:

• Elaborate switching/resistor networks are needed to automatically change load levels
• Resistors provide only unity power factor, thus do not simulate real world loads
• Resistors impedance change with temperature so accurate load levels are nearly impossible to obtain
• Current shunts and DMMs are also needed to measure actual load current and voltages
