Oscilloscope Security

LeCroy has implemented a number of easy to follow steps. Below is a list of suggestions to maintain the safety of your DSO.

Windows Based Digital Oscilloscopes

Your LeCroy Digital Storage Oscilloscope (DSO), when viewed from the signal path, is functionally an oscilloscope that happens to be built on the widely used Windows operating system. Using Windows provides easy access to peripheral hardware, third party software, and familiar user interfaces, to supplement the scope’s primary design purpose… capture and analysis of waveforms. When viewed from the network connector or removable disk drives (e.g. floppy, CD-ROM, USB storage key) however, your LeCroy DSO is a computer, that happens to run an oscilloscope application. From this vantage point, LeCroy as the provider of the DSO, and yourself as its user, need to take proper precautions relating to prevention of viruses and other security threats.

LeCroy’s Commitment to DSO Security

LeCroy is committed to providing industry leading DSO protection to users, and has established procedures to insure:

LeCroy’s pool of demonstration digital oscilloscopes are protected against viruses, and can be safely connected to customer information networks for evaluation purposes.

Every new LeCroy Windows based digital oscilloscope is shipped from our factory with an industry leading Anti Virus (AV) software trial subscription included free of charge.

Every LeCroy DSO is manufactured and tested in a secure and isolated network environment. It is scanned non-invasively using the latest virus definitions before being put into its shipping carton, with a signed certificate included in the box.

Every DSO returned to LeCroy for repair, calibration, or updating is scanned non-invasively on receipt and prior to return, with a signed certificate provided, and is worked on in a secure and isolated network environment.

Every reconditioned DSO is treated like a manufactured or serviced DSO from a software perspective and is made fully safe, secure, and up to date prior to sale.

LeCroy actively participates in Microsoft Service Pack betas, and also tests critical updates as soon as they are available. In the very unlikely event that an update adversely affects the performance of your DSO we will update the DSO Security site with information and potential workarounds.

LeCroy on Antivirus software

LeCroy advises strongly that all X-Stream based scopes be equipped with antivirus software prior to connection to a network. It is equally important to keep the virus definition files frequently updated. LeCroy has evaluated Symantec AntiVirus for effectiveness and impact on performance.

Click here to view the results of these tests.

Scopes equipped with Windows XP Pro SP2, or later, will detect installed anti-virus software and will report when antivirus definitions are out of date.

For You

While this process ensures that you will receive your instrument without viruses, it does not necessarily protect your instrument from receiving a virus once it has been connected to your network.

You should take precautions when connecting a LeCroy instrument to your network including:

Install anti-virus software on your instrument. You may wish to check your IS department first to see if they have a “preferred Anti-Virus” tool.

Ensure that the Anti-Virus definitions are up-to-date using Symantec’s “Live Update” service.

Ensure that the latest Operating System Service Pack and Critical Updates have been installed by running “Windows Update”, available in the windows “Start” menu.

This page provides information regarding operating system updates in the unlikely event that an O/S update is incompatible with the X-Stream firmware. Since new Operating System Vulnerability, Worms, and Viruses are detected frequently it is highly recommended to periodically ensure your virus definitions and operating system patches are up to date.

New Oscilloscopes

LeCroy has selected NOD32 as the tool of choice for protection of Digital Oscilloscopes. We have tested this product fully for compatibility and performance impact. Because some DSO users may prefer another tool for this purpose, or may be planning to use their DSO in stand alone mode, LeCroy includes NOD32 trial installer on the oscilloscope desktop. If a DSO is protected with antivirus, however has been disconnected from the network for an extended period, LeCroy recommends that the virus definition files be updated manually using a CD or USB memory stick, prior to reconnection to the network. LeCroy’s DSO production lines are updated regularly, to ship OS images complete with needed service packs and patches. A recovery partition is included on the hard disk drive of each LeCroy oscilloscope. It is possible you may receive a DSO that has been in transit or storage for some period, and LeCroy recommends that users routinely apply critical OS patches as part of DSO maintenance. Your DSO is expected to provide long service life (LeCroy long term support extends for seven years after your DSO is removed from the new product catalog) and therefore your recovery partition will ‘age’. If you find it necessary to rebuild an older DSO, it is important that needed service packs and critical updates be reinstalled.

New Demonstration Oscilloscopes

LeCroy demonstration Digital Oscilloscopes are protected by NOD32, which is updated weekly, and by OS patches monthly.
Your DSO will be scanned non-invasively for viruses upon receipt at a LeCroy service center. If a virus is found, you will be contacted and asked for instructions on how you want us to proceed. While at LeCroy, your machine will be carefully isolated and protected, and prior to return shipment it will be non-invasively scanned again and certified.

Windows Vista 64 -based Oscilloscopes

The WavePro 7 Zi, DDA 7 Zi, SDA 7 Zi, WaveMaster 8 Zi, DDA 8 Zi, SDA 8 Zi are shipped with Windows Vista 64 with Service Pack 1 installed. These oscilloscopes offer an increased level of security out of the box due to the enhancements that SP1 offers, including a network firewall that is enabled by default. Windows Vista 64 -based oscilloscopes can benefit from Microsoft’s Windows Update service, and users are highly recommended to take advantage of the critical updates that are published there.

Windows XP Pro -based Oscilloscopes

The WaveRunner 6000 ‘A’ models, the WavePro 7000 ‘A’ models, and currently shipping WaveMaster, WaveExpert, SDA, and DDA variants ship with Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 3 installed. These oscilloscopes offer an increased level of security out of the box due to the enhancements that SP3 offers, including a network firewall that is enabled by default. Windows XP Pro -based oscilloscopes can benefit from Microsoft’s Windows Update service, and users are highly recommended to take advantage of the critical updates that are published there. Users should monitor the space available on C:\, when installing Windows updates. If the oscilloscope is running short on hard drive space on C:\, please contact the Service Department for information on upgrading
the drive.

Windows XP Embedded -based
Oscilloscopes

The WaveSurfer product line currently ships with XP Embedded SP3. Although your WaveSurfer is shipped from the factory at the SP3 level, it may report itself as XP without SP3, which may preclude some Windows applications from being installed. The first of the patches described below resolves this issue. XP Embedded, even though virtually identical to XP Pro, cannot currently use the Windows Update service. Instead, LeCroy has created two O/S update installers which are available here (“WaveSurfer Patch” for WaveSurfer 400 Series Only). It is very important to note that the released Service Pack 2 and Service Pack 3 for Windows XP Home and Professional is not compatible with XP Embedded. Installing this service pack will almost certainly render your oscilloscope unusable, requiring the OS to be re-installed. Support for critical updates and service packs are not provided for XP Embedded. XP pro may be installed if SW patches and security updates are required. Contact your local service office for information concerning this upgrade.

Windows 2000 -based Oscilloscopes

The WaveRunner 6000 (non-A), older WavePro, WaveMaster, SDA, and DDA oscilloscopes are based upon Microsoft’s Windows 2000 Operating System. The first units shipped at the Service Pack 2 (SP2) level, more recent units ship with SP3, and SP4. Based on past events, most notably on the pervasiveness of the Blaster, and other worms and viruses, LeCroy recommends that all users upgrade their scope’s operating system to Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 which can be found at Windows 2000 Service Pack 4. Before upgrading, you should note that the use of Service Pack 4 requires the scope software version 2.9.1.10 or greater. The scope will not operate properly if Service Pack 4 is installed with older scope software versions.

CAUTION Scope users MUST upgrade their software to the latest software version prior to installing Windows 2000 Service Pack 4.

A modern scope can take the tedium out of checking protocol operations in an embedded system with multiple I2C devices

In designing and testing an embedded system, engineers need to provide a way for the various devices and subsystems on the system, such as DACs, low-speed ADCs, fan control chips, EEPROMs, and PLDs to communicate. The Inter-Integrated Circuit protocol, more commonly known as I2C, is one of the more popular protocols in use today.

Unlike protocols such as SPI and UART that may need multiple dedicated I/O connections, I2C communication takes place using only two I/O connections. Since I/O connections on embedded systems are generally scarce and engineers need to use a minimal number of pins per device, the I2C protocol is often preferred. However, when using an embedded system with multiple I2C devices, debugging the I2C protocol can be tedious. But by using a modern digital oscilloscope for debugging, engineers can analyze the I2C protocol and view physical signals without disrupting the system.

Understanding I2C

It is important for engineers to understand the protocol thoroughly in order to select the correct set of tools for debugging. I2C is a multimaster single-ended serial protocol, which means it can support multiple slaves and multiple masters on the same bus. It is based on two bidirectional lines, Serial Clock Line (SCL) and Serial Data Line (SDA), which are pulled high with pull-up resistors. These lines together are commonly known as an I2C bus, which is used for communication among all I2C devices (multiple masters and slaves).

I2C protocol comes in four modes: Standard mode (100 kHz), Fast mode (400 kHz), Fast mode-Plus (1 MHz), and High Speed mode (3.4 MHz). The protocol consists of a Start bit, Address bits, read/write (R/W) bit, data byte, acknowledge bit (ACK), no-acknowledge bit (NACK), stop bit, and re-start bit (which is equivalent to Start bit without a stop bit).

Fig. 1. The screenshot shows I2C address, and how SDA and SCL signals are interpreted for various protocol components.

The Start bit (S) is always sent by a master to initiate communication. It is defined as high to low transition on the SDA line, while SCL is held high.

Address bits are either in a 7- or 10-bit format, depending on system configuration. The 7-bit format has fixed address bits and hardware-selectable address bits (optional), for a total of 7 bits. And the 10-bit format consists of a fixed command (11110) and a 10-bit address (fixed or hardware selectable).

The read/write bit (R/W) is the eighth bit on the address byte, where low is write and high is read, for the 7-bit addressing mode.

In the 10-bit addressing mode, read/write is a little more involved than the 7-bit addressing mode. The write operation consists of two bytes, and the read operation consists of three bytes.

Fig. 2. The display shows Write (top) and Read (bottom) addressing for 10-bit I2C mode.

The data byte is sent by the transmitting device (master or slave) and the acknowledge bit (ACK) occurs on the ninth SCL clock pulse. It is transmitted by the receiving device, while it pulls SDA line low. The no-acknowledge bit is transmitted when the receiving device fails to pull the SDA line low. The transfer is aborted when NACK is received. The stop bit is always sent by the master to end the communication. It is defined as low to high transition on the SDA line while the SCL line is held high.

Debugging the I2C protocol

Embedded-system engineers must make sense of the I2C messages sent back and forth on their system. They must identify the messages being sent to a particular device based on the device’s address, and then continue to analyze the payload/data bytes transferred between the devices.

Often, engineers use low-cost I2C sniffer/analyzers to capture I2C traffic for analysis. However, most embedded designs have no connector to attach an I2C analyzer on the embedded board, so engineers must look at electrical signals on the I2C bus to make sense of the error or messages transferred among devices.

The problem becomes even more complicated when the device that must be debugged is hot swappable, and engineers cannot put the entire system in debug mode. Oscilloscopes are very useful in these situations, because they allow engineers to probe the I2C bus and capture I2C traffic without disrupting the entire system.

Nevertheless, capturing I2C traffic is only half the battle. Engineers must also decode the messages sent to several devices, and so often spend many hours manually counting bits. An oscilloscope with an I2C trigger and decode package avoids the frustration of decoding messages manually and gives an instant snapshot of the I2C communication taking place.

For example, consider the state of a Nintendo Wii controller’s I2C bus while it is connected to a FreeStyleGames DJ Hero system (see Fig. 3). Since the Wii controller and DJ Hero communicate over I2C, several packets are being sent back and forth at any given time [1].

Fig 3. I2C traffic with multiple devices.

Using a modern digital oscilloscope, engineers can capture I2C traffic and use its decoding capabilities to analyze messages communicated between the master and the slave. The scope’s ability to decode the I2C protocol lets engineers debug the design efficiently and effectively. To quickly view timing and packet relationships, a table view provides a higher-level snapshot of a long I2C bus capture.

The table view in Fig. 3 shows messages (in the data column) sent to each device based on the device address (in the address column) and presents the data in a format similar to a sniffer/analyzer. Also, the scope’s I2C trigger capabilities enable engineers to focus on the device they plan to debug, using specific address and data triggers to isolate communication between a particular slave and master.

Advanced debug tools

Finally, some oscilloscopes also have feature-finding algorithms that help engineers interpret what surrounds the anomaly and what caused it on the SCL line (see Ffig. 4). The feature finder is especially helpful in locating the clock synchronization process, which is automatically performed by masters in a multi-master environment.

Fig. 4. The runt is shown in the yellow box and the “found feature” in the lower trace. The upper left shows a table of three features found that met this condition.

The I2C protocol is ubiquitous in embedded systems, but the protocol structure of multiple slaves and masters creates many challenges to solving problems in a system. Choosing the correct scope with specialized trigger, decode, advanced search, and viewing tools can simplify and shorten the debug process. ■

Note that no claims are made regarding any known bug in Nintendo Wii and FreeStyleGames DJ Hero. These systems were used merely to provide an example of a hypothetical real-world situation.

Fast Fourier Transform Defined
The fast Fourier transform (FFT) is a discrete Fourier transform algorithm which reduces the number of computations needed for N points. If the function to be transformed is not harmonically related to the sampling frequency, the response of an FFT looks like a sinc function.

LeCroy Introduces High Sample Rate, High Resolution Arbitrary Waveform Generators for Analog and Digital Waveform Generation

LeCroy ArbStudio 1104D

Chestnut Ridge, NY – LeCroy Corporation recently announced the ArbStudio series of arbitrary waveform generators (AWG) capable of generating signals up to 125 MHz with high sample rate, long memory and high resolution as well as a variety of operating modes, modulation capabilities and a digital pattern generator. The software interface that controls the hardware is designed to simplify waveform creation with an intuitive navigation tree which allows easy access to all channels along with special views for controlling basic function generator outputs as well as pulse width modulation (PWM) capabilities. The ability to have 2 and 4 channel units in a single, compact form factor not only saves bench space but also provides a low price per channel. Additionally the 4 channel ArbStudio models have an expansion port that allows up to 8 units to be connected, providing up to 32 synchronous analog waveforms.

Four ArbStudio models are available including 2 and 4 channel versions with analog waveform capabilities plus 2 and 4 channel versions which offer a combination of analog waveform and digital pattern generation capabilities. All models have a bandwidth of 125 MHz, maximum sample rate of 1 GS/s, long memory of 2 Mpts/ch and high 16 bit resolution. These specifications result in a higher performance arbitrary waveform generator that competitive models at this price point cannot match.

Powerful, Intuitive Software Interface
The ArbStudio software runs on an external PC freeing the user from the small displays and readouts found on a typical AWG. A simple function generator window is available for basic waveform creation while a unique, streamlined control panel dedicated for PWM signals is also available. The main software mode provides a start page that provides tutorials on creating a wide range of both simple and complex waveforms, as well as shortcuts to recent projects and an intuitive navigation tree to get started quickly. Once waveform creation has begun, graphical displays show the waveforms that have been created or sequenced and the views can be customized to only show the windows that are of most interest to the user.

Arbitrary, DDS or Both
Arbitrary waveform generators are typically available with one of two technologies, either True Arbitrary or Direct Digital Synthesis (DDS). Each of these modes comes with advantages and disadvantageous that force the user to think about what they need from an AWG. ArbStudio however does not have this limitation; it provides both modes and allows the user to choose which mode is needed for their waveforms. Furthermore, ArbStudio channels can be set to any mode independently of each other for the ultimate in flexibility.
